I discovered felting (or fulling, as the technical term for felting knitted garments is known), when I came across a felted hat at a yarn shop about ten years ago. I became fascinated with the process that involves hot water, soap and friction to turn a loosely knitted fabric into a warm, solid, and virtually waterproof garment. I have been experimenting with different shapes and colors ever since. All my hats are knitted on a knitting loom out of wool yarn. They then go through the hot cycle of washing machine a few times to felt them. Once felted they are shaped, allowed to dry, and brushed to finish them. After several years of making hats part time, and selling them through shops and galleries, I took the leap and started doing Art and Crafts Festivals four years ago. I sell my hats all over California and the United States . I combine my travels to art festivals with visits to national parks, museums, and yarn and fabric shops. I’m also an avid hiker and birdwatcher.
I live and work in Kelseyville, on beautiful Clear Lake, in Northern California . All hats on this site ©2011 by Tess McGuire. All photos by Chunyi McIver. Website design and graphics by Whitehorn Web Design |
